Why You Must Actively Manage Your Business Processes
Processes are the mechanism through which all work is performed in an organization.
Link Strategy to Action with Process Management
Most business processes were “patched” and evolved, in response to new business opportunities and
problems as they occurred. In typical organizations, processes were not designed with much rigor
unless they were manufacturing or highly focused computer systems, such as those associated with
enterprise resource planning (ERP).
Processes tend to remain a loose collection of activities performed within departments, where
people work hard to compensate for shortcomings in the overall system. (For example, by design,
ERP systems are highly process-oriented. Many organizations implement ERP systems by changing the
way in which work is performed, in order to satisfy the demanding requirements of the software.
However, the people who operate within an ERP organization still have a strong functional / department
orientation, with no formalized process management. People, processes and systems can inadvertently
end up placed in opposing performance tracks.)
“When you place a good person in a bad process, the
process wins every time.”
The performance of an organization is the sum of the performance of its processes. All measured
performance variables, whether quality, financial, capacity/throughput, time, risk, or other, occur
within the context of the organization’s processes. Activities performed by people and machines occur
within exactly the same context and the performance of any process is identical to the performance of
the activities of which it is constituted. As a result, we can analyze and/or create, understand and
manage performance through a “Performance Architecture”, describing the performance
logic linking and integrating these organization, process and activity levels
(see the "Framework" link on the upper left). Other measures frameworks, such as ISO, Activity-Based Management, Economic Value-Added,
and generic platforms, such as Balanced Scorecard or Value-Based Management, can be readily incorporated
into or reflected by this “Performance Architecture.”
FMI “Performance Architecture” provides analytical procedures with which to integrate
any or all of these components, together with popular tools, such as Balanced Scorecards, Management by
objective, ISO, and Shareholder Value Analysis, into a holistic and disciplined perspective centred on a
solid understanding of your business processes.
Whether your organization’s performance need is assessment/audit, documentation, planning, analysis,
improvement, design or redesign, implementation, measures, management, monitoring and control or any
combination of these business imperatives,
Focused Management’s seasoned consultants will support your assignment,
working independently or facilitating your cross-functional work teams. Our projects feature
well-articulated, critical-business-issues-driven, results-oriented deliverables, clearly defined in
advance.
Focused Management
associates can work at the strategic, organizational, systems, process or job level as
required, but, more importantly, we work at all times with an integrated perspective, subject to the
scope and demands of each individual project assignment. (If necessary, a situation assessment may be
conducted at the start of any engagement, to clarify its scope and potential and to frame more precise
project parameters, structure and expectations.)
Specifically,
Focused Management
is able to effectively integrate your business’ financial, structural, process,
systems and knowledge management challenges and issues into a single, easily understood context. The
“Performance Architecture” can help senior managers get their arms around strategic and tactical problem
resolution, as well as improvement opportunities, in order to create constructive change and to ensure
that it takes hold.
Focused Management’s core competency is our ability to quickly drive out an operating picture of any organization,
